Get to know Gavin
What inspired you to become a teacher?
The great teachers I had at primary school definitely had an impact on why I became a primary school teacher. One thing I remember clearly was I only had 1 male teacher in my 8 years of primary school. I have found memories of this teacher and he inspired me to learn and to ultimately become a teacher. I believe it is important that our tamariki have positive male role models in education.
What do you enjoy most about working at our school?
It has to be the awesome children in our community. Children who are keen to learn, challenge themselves and show respect and kindess to all. Also the supportive staff and families make Don Buck Primary School a great place to teach.
How do you keep your students engaged and motivated in learning?
Giving the students agency over their learning and having choices, I believe is an important part of motivating students to learn. Encouraging them to give everything a go and to be the best that they can be. They are encouraged to push themselves and that making mistakes is normal and to be courageous.
